Published Aug 24, 2020The CW is developing a live-action series remake of the Cartoon Network early-aughts kids' cartoon, The Powerpuff Girls.
Diablo Cody is on board to write and produce the series, alongside Veronica Mars's Heather Regnier through Warner Bros. and Greg Berlanti's Berlanti Productions.
According to Variety, the rebooted series will follow the trio of superheroes, who have become "disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting."
The original Craig McCracken-created animated series first aired back in 1998 and ran until 2005. It followed three kindergarten-aged superhero girls named Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, who were created because of a failed science experiment by their father, Professor Utonium.
If the new series is anything like the network's previous acquisitions, we're due for a pretty gritty reinterpretation of the original series — perhaps not unlike the CW's Riverdale or Smallville.
So far, the series has yet to receive its own edgy title, let alone a release date or cast. Stay tuned as more details become available.
