Published Sep 18, 2014By Divine Right frontman José Contreras has been making music for over 25 years while on the way to becoming an established name within Canadian indie rock lore. In all those years of work, the man had never released a record of solo material. When asked why in 2013 by his producer, his answer was simply because no one had ever asked him to before. This past summer changed that, when Contreras released a 10 track collection of reworked and reimagined songs from his lengthy back catalogue.
We invited the singer-songwriter to the Exclaim! office to perform "Listen To My Angels," the stripped-down first single from his self-titled solo record.
Many have been known to praise the acoustic environment of a bathroom for its abundance of hard surfaces, causing multiple reverberations that result in a noticeable fullness and depth. The method certainly works for Contreras, who delicately finger-picks his way through the song accompanied only by his smooth, mellow vocals. Decidedly less high-strung when compared to the original version released in 2004, it's a wonderfully pleasing new take.
