Published Apr 08, 2016Having left her full-time teaching job in 2003 to make music, songwriter Kate Maki is ready to release her sixth record since the career change. Titled Head in the Sand, Maki's latest effort will arrive this spring.
Recorded and mixed by Fred Squire in the spring of 2015, the record is described as Maki's "most compelling and expansive-sounding record," crediting the use of a vintage eight-track tape machine, a recording console from the 1980s and a borrowed spring reverb unit. Drummer Nathan Lawr provides work behind the kit, while Maki and Squire play all other instruments themselves.
The record's arrangements are described as sparse, with the trio embracing the standard guitars-bass-drums band formation while occasionally adding organ or piano. This is said to allow Maki's vocals to become the record's focal point, driving songs that examine matters of the human condition, including defeat, loneliness, infidelity, acceptance and atonement.
Head in the Sand arrives on May 20 through Maki's own Confusion Unlimited Records, with CD, LP and digital versions available. Scroll through the record's tracklist to hear opening track "Keep Right" in the player below, where you'll also find some upcoming tour dates.
