How do I get a job in the music industry?
Published Aug 22, 2011My career goal is to be a music promoter for a mid-size record company. I've started doing promotions for a very small local label, but I don't know how motivated the owners are and how much of a future there is. As well the pay is non-existent and making rent is getting harder and harder each month. Do you have any advice on how to get a paid entry level job in the music industry?
I'm not really sure what you mean by "music promoter for a record company," but if you mean you want to get into marketing and promotion then the thing to do is this: First, identify the music that you really know and love. Next, find out what record companies are putting out that kind of music. Then start sending out resumes. Heck, pick up the phone, even, and let them know you are out there looking for work. Go to music conferences and take every opportunity to network. Don't be shy! If you are keen, sharp, and give the impression that you know something about music, you'll land something eventually. In my experience, showing up, regularly and with enthusiasm, is more than half the battle.
